Social Representation in the Media

Media dictates and defines. From the first time that media, whether via print, telegraph, telephone, television, or radio, has dictated social definitions to audiences. The fact that one medium has the ability to reach an innumerous amount of people is an indicator of it’s influential power, and potential to create definitions. If someone is ignorant of a topic/subject matter, a people, or a geographical location, they are usually inclined to take what information/truths they are given from media outlets as ultimate and universal truths. Whether directly or indirectly, this has been the case in terms of racial/ethnic stereotypes, gender roles and identification, social status, and many other areas. Looking at today’s advertisements, television shows, and marketing techniques is an effective example of the aforementioned ideas.
